WHAT ARE DRY EYES?

Dry eye is a condition that can cause irritation for a variety of reasons. If you are suffering from dry eyes, you may experience symptoms of visual blurriness, redness or inflammation, or even overly watery eyes.

CAUSES

For the most part, dry eye is caused by your eyes not properly producing adequate tears. This could happen because the mixture of water, oils, and mucus might be unbalanced, or even how your eyes make tears might not be working properly. These symptoms could be a result of:

Ageing
Medical conditions (i.e., diabetes)
Medications
Tear gland damage
Digital eye strain (blinking less often or concentrating on a screen too long)
Eyelid problems (i.e., blepharitis)

WHO IS AT RISK

Dry eyes can occur in anyone, but some factors can increase your chances of developing dry eye symptoms. These include:

Being over 50 years old.
Having a diet with low vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acid levels.
Wearing contact lenses.
Being a woman, as hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, birth control medication, or menopause, can disrupt the production of tears.

MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION

Meibomian gland dysfunction can lead to fluctuating or chronic dry eye symptoms, such as:

Red eyes
Burning or scratchy eyes
Foreign body sensation
Blurred vision
Grittiness or irritation

If left untreated, MGD can progress and cause further complications, affecting the eyelids and eye surface.
