Digital Eye Strain

WHAT IS DIGITAL EYE STRAIN?

If you have ever experienced eye discomfort after spending a few hours working on a computer screen, watching television, or staring at your phone, you might be experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain.

Digital eye strain is a common eye condition that is caused by excessive screen time.

WHAT CAUSES DIGITAL EYE STRAIN?

Digital eye strain occurs when you focus at a set distance for an extended period. This intense focusing is hard on your eyes and, without regular breaks, can lead to digital eye strain.

Digital eye strain can develop if:

  • You have been staring at a screen for a long time.
  • You are trying to focus on something in dim light.
  • You have been exposed to excessive brightness or glare.

SYMPTOMS OF DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

Digital eye strain has many symptoms, some of them reminiscent of other eye conditions. These symptoms include:

  • Sore or watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Blurred vision

Symptoms may be more severe if you already have an eye condition like myopia, presbyopia, or dry eyes.

Some research has also shown that increased screen time may be linked to the early development of myopia in children. If you believe your child may be showing symptoms of digital eye strain, please request your appointment with us as soon as you can.

TREATING DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

If you find that it is becoming increasingly difficult to work on a screen for extended periods, then you should speak with our optometrists about digital eye strain relief.

While you may be experiencing digital eye strain, some symptoms could be caused by other eye conditions. By visiting your optometrist, you can get to the root of your discomfort.

To help give your eyes a break, there are a couple of different exercises you can perform to help mitigate your symptoms:

  • Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, give your eyes a break by shifting your focus to an object at least 20 feet away and holding your gaze there for at least 20 seconds.
  • Adjust the ambient lighting and turn down your screen brightness.
  • Use artificial tears for temporary relief.

Neurolens for Strained Eyes

Although screen time might be a contributing factor, eye misalignment could be the cause of your eye strain.

With more people turning to digital devices for learning, working, and leisure, the additional pressure on your eyes can aggravate even minor misalignment. The visual system is forced to continually compensate for the extra stress on your eyes and the trigeminal nerve (a complex nerve system responsible for head and neck sensations).

Neurolens can ease the tension by correcting eye misalignment.

Are Neurolenses Available for Prescription Eyeglasses?

Neurolens is the first prescription lens designed to correct eye misalignment. We use a specialized measuring device to detect and evaluate where your lenses should sit for improved comfort and performance. The exam can take less than 3 minutes to complete, capturing your customized measurements for your prescription lenses.

How Does Neurolens Help Eye Strain?

Neurolens uses a contoured prism design customized for your unique eye position. Prism correction helps bend light before it reaches the eye, redirecting it to the correct position. Neurolens’ innovation provides an additional correction that accounts for viewing near and far distances to help ease symptoms of:

  • Eye strain or fatigue
  • Headaches or neck pain
  • Dry eye sensation
  • Motion Sickness
